Few other places preserve the typical beauties of Sicily as Giardini Naxos, cradle of ancient Mediterranean civilization and advanced tourist station in the southern Italy.
Giardini Naxos was the first Greek outpost of Sicily. During the Peloponnesian War, the tyrant of Syracuse Dionysius the Elder had it razed to the ground and built Tauromenion (Taormina) on the height above. The name Naxos remained over time even in Roman Times and during the Byzantine Empire and on the remains of the Greek colony, was formed a small town. This became the strategic port for the nearby Taormina.
On 18 August 1860 Garibaldi and his troops, after completing the expedition to Sicily, embarked from Giardini for Calabria to continue their undertaking on the Continent. In the XIX century there was a development of several economic initiatives related to fishing to the manufacturing wrought iron and terracotta, agriculture and extraction of essences from citrus fruits.
